Spectacular scenery combined with fascinating architectural remains and ancient history—all of this awaits you on this fabulous vacation through Sicily and Southern Italy. If you’re interested in Roman history, this tour is certainly for you. You’ll stop in Matera, where you’ll visit one of the Sassi Houses—prehistoric cave dwellings built into the rock—thought to be some of the first human settlements in Italy. You’ll also visit Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, known for its blue skies and rich heritage. Visit the ancient Greek Theater in Taormina, built in the 3rd century BC; the ancient Greek structures that have survived for 2,400 years in Agrigento; and the 12th-century Norman Cathedral in Monreale, famous for its 50,000 square feet of precious byzantine mosaics. Photos and words cannot adequately capture these sights.

History buffs will also enjoy Pompeii, which was completely buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Imagine what life was like some 2,000 years ago! This preserved town gives you an amazingly detailed look into life at the peak of the Roman Empire. Of course, you’ll also visit some of the ancient structures in Rome, such as the Colosseum. In Naples, you’ll visit Reggia di Capodimonte, a grand Bourbon palace that houses the National Museum of Capodimonte. This is just another out-of-the-ordinary experience included by Globus.

Day 1

Arrive in Rome, Italy. Welcome to Rome! At 5 pm, meet your Tour Director and traveling companions, and enjoy a special welcome dinner with wine at one of Rome’s lively restaurants.

Day 2

Rome. Globus’ unique guided sightseeing includes inside visits to the VATICAN MUSEUMS and SISTINE CHAPEL with Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings and The Last Judgment, and monumental ST. PETER’S SQUARE and BASILICA to admire Michelangelo’s Pietà. Then, drive to the Roman Forum, and visit the amazing COLOSSEUM, where gladiators once fought. An optional walking tour with a Local Guide is available to further explore famous sites for those who wish to see it all.

Day 3

Rome–Pompeii–Sorrento. Arrive in fascinating POMPEII, the Roman city both destroyed and preserved by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Your Local Guide will walk you past patrician homes, public baths, and commercial districts strikingly recalling day-to-day life when Rome was at the apex of her power. Continue to the charming resort of Sorrento.

Day 4

Sorrento. Excursion to Capri. Speed across the bay by JETFOIL to the Isle of Capri. Ride the FUNICULAR to Capri village for a guided visit of this pretty town. Free time to explore the little shops on the piazzetta before returning to Sorrento.

Day 5

Sorrento. Excursion to Naples. Arrive in colorful Naples. A Local Guide takes you first to the NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM, housing some of the world’s greatest Greco-Roman treasures; focus on the well-preserved objects found in Pompeii. Then, on to the city center to admire the remarkable Triumphal Arch of the New Castle, St. Charles Theater, the Royal Palace, Galleria Umberto, and the semicircular Piazza Plebiscito. Then, visit [LF] splendid REGGIA DI CAPODIMONTE, a grand Bourbon palace, formerly the summer residence and hunting lodge of the Kings of the Two Sicilies, that now houses the National Museum of Capodimonte. The original Capodimonte Porcelain Factory was founded in the mid-18th century. Back in Sorrento, look forward to a [LF] GELATO DEMONSTRATION & TASTING.

Day 6

Sorrento–Trani–Alberobello. Stop in Trani, where [LF] a special lunch with local specialties awaits you at a seaside restaurant. Continue to the picturesque town of Alberobello, where you will stay for the next two nights. (B,L,D)

Day 7

Alberobello. In the morning, enjoy an orientation of the town, famous for its unique trulli—whitewashed, stone, circular houses with pinnacled, conical roofs. Balance of the day at leisure. You may wish to join an optional dinner at a traditional Apulian agriturismo.

Day 8

Alberobello–Matera–Reggio Calabria. In Matera, a guided walking tour features a visit to one of the picturesque SASSI HOUSES. Afterwards, enjoy a spectacular drive south along the Gulf of Taranto before heading inland to Reggio Calabria with a Local Guide. Visit the MUSEUM that houses the world-famous bronze warrior sculptures, Bronzi di Riace.

Day 9

Reggio Calabria–Taormina Riviera. Cross the Strait of Messina by FERRY and start your discovery of the beautiful island of Sicily, the great melting pot of the Mediterranean world. Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Saracens, Normans, French, and Spanish have left their marks and contributed to its rich heritage. Arrive in Taormina, a charming hilltop town overlooking the Ionian Sea, and visit the ancient GREEK THEATER dating back to the 3rd century BC. Time to stroll and shop along Corso Umberto I. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste local specialties, like the Sicilian Granita (a treat similar to sorbet).

At Leisure in Taormina Riviera. Two days to just relax in this beautiful resort or choose from our exciting optional excursions: to Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, and to the fascinating archaeological site of Syracuse, birthplace of mathematician Archimedes and once a powerful Greek port whose fleet was feared throughout the Mediterranean. On Tuesday evening, enjoy an included dinner at your hotel. On Wednesday evening, an included dinner with wine has been organized at a local restaurant with breathtaking sea views. (B,D daily)

Even travelers who have visited Athens and Delphi are awed by the gigantic yet graceful Greek structures that miraculously survived 24 centuries of tormented history. Arrive at your hotel in Palermo.

Palermo. Guided sightseeing features the ornate Piazza Bellini, Capo Market, the baroque Church of Immacolata, and the CATHEDRAL. Drive up to Monreale for a panoramic view of the Conca d’Oro and a visit to the 12th-century NORMAN CATHEDRAL, famous for its 50,000 square feet of precious byzantine mosaics. Later, [LF] visit an original SICILIAN FARM, Antica Masseria Barone di Salvo in Tumminia. Meet the casaro (cheese-maker), see how he prepares a fresh ricotta and enjoy your exclusive farewell dinner with local specialties and wine, the perfect way to celebrate the success of your Italian vacation.
